It's time for more hardcore family pathos as Transparent season 4 arrives

Here’s what up in the world of TV for Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23. All times are Eastern.

Top Pick

Transparent (Amazon, Friday): Season three was a pretty dark and troubled time for the Pfeffermans—especially Maura—but it still managed to go out on a moment of grace for poor Sally. Still, here’s hoping things aren’t quite so depressing this time around. The entire season drops today, and we’ll be doing reviews once a day, divvied up among five critics: Erik Adams, Eric Thurm, Danette Chavez, Nick Wanserski, and Josh Modell. Will they be in agreement about the season’s quality, or will they squabble lovably/painfully like a certain damaged family? The rest of us wait with bated breath.

Regular coverage

DuckTales (Disney XD, Saturday, 7 a.m.)
Halt And Catch Fire (AMC, Saturday, 9 p.m.)

Wild card

Neo Yokio (Netflix, Friday): This is an odd duck. (Odder than DuckTales, for sure.) Executive produced by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and Adult Swim mainstay Nick Weidenfeld (everything from Golan The Insatiable to Moral Orel), the show is described as “a postmodern collage of homages to classic anime, English literature, and modern New York fashion and culture.” On top of that, the lead actors lending their pipes to this animated venture are Jaden Smith, Susan Sarandon, Jude Law, Tavi Gevinson, Jason Schwartzman, Desus Nice, and The Kid Mero (better known as Desus & Mero). So, you probably already know if that sounds enticing or excruciating to your sensibilities.
