J.J. Abrams gives Chewbacca Mom some pointers on The Late Late Show
Last week, Candace Payne donned a Chewbacca mask in the parking lot of a Texas Kohl’s, much to her own delight, initially. She shared the gleeful experience via Facebook Live, and her infectious laughter quickly made the internet rounds, prompting The A.V. Club to wonder just how quickly Ellen Degeneres would invite “Chewbacca Mom” onto her show. But the daytime host was beaten to the chase by late-night’s James Corden, who rewarded Payne for spreading so much joy into our miserable lives by asking her for a ride to work.
The Late Late Show host resisted the lure of the Chewbacca masks—which aren’t movie quality, but that’s okay—as long as he could, but his resolve crumbled after J.J. Abrams joined them. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens director mostly approved of Payne’s Chewbacca impression; he gave her just one note on how to improve it. Then it was off to the studio, where Corden revealed that Chewbacca originator Peter Mayhew wants to meet Payne. At this writing, Payne’s video had garnered about 140 million views, making it the most-viewed Facebook Live video ever. That’ll be tough to beat, but let’s not underestimate how thrilled Payne will be to meet the “real” Chewbacca.
