J.J. Abrams promises there will be fewer shenanigans with the next Cloverfield movie
For better or worse, the Cloverfield series—if you can call three largely disconnected movies a “series”—has been partially defined by its wacky stunts. The first movie had no title for most of its marketing build-up, 10 Cloverfield Lane was sold to audiences as a completely unrelated movie until just before it came out, and The Cloverfield Paradox received a surprise release on Netflix after the Super Bowl, but series mastermind J.J. Abrams recently promised that the next Cloverfield movie won’t involve as many shenanigans as Paradox did.
Speaking at CinemaCon, an event based around showing exciting footage of new movies and then not releasing that footage to the public, Abrams noted that another Cloverfield movie is “in the works for theaters.” That seems to confirm a report from February, when unnamed sources indicated that The Cloverfield Paradox’s Netflix debut was a “one-off” deal to make the movie “immediately profitable” after its behind-the-scenes issues.
As for what that next Cloverfield movie will be, we previously believed that it would be Julius Avery’s World War II-set horror/thriller Overlord, but Abrams shot that theory down and explicitly declared that Overlord is “not a Cloverfield movie”—unless this is all part of a new promotional gimmick. Either way, the movie is about Nazi zombies, and it will be the first R-rated feature to come out of Abrams’ Bad Robot studio.
