J.K. Simmons joins Damien Chazelle’s jazz musical La La Land
Everyone who saw the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies knows that J.K. Simmons is awesome, but the whole world finally came to the same conclusion last year when he won an Academy Award for his role in director Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash. Now, Simmons is reuniting with Chazelle for La La Land, a jazz musical that’s going to star Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. That comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says Simmons’ character will be someone named “Boss,” though it doesn’t specify whether or not he’ll be singing and/or screaming at anyone. The plot will follow a jazz pianist (Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Stone) who fall in love, but as one of them (or maybe both of them) becomes more successful, “they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fabric of their love affair.” That all sounds like standard drama fare, but we have to assume that Gosling and Stone will also break into song at some point as the fabric of their love affair frays.
