Despite the fact that the appropriateness of its existence has been called into question by Bostonians, Mark Wahlberg’s movie about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing is moving forward. Frequent Wahlberg collaborator Peter Berg is directing the film, which will star the Entourage executive producer as a “composite Boston Police Department officer who is central to the investigation and manhunt.” Wahlberg will have his hands full trying to take on the character traits of an entire police department, but he’ll have some help snapping to attention, as The Hollywood Reporter writes that J.K. Simmons has just signed on to kick a little procedural ass. Simmons will portray a superior officer in the film who, unlike Wahlberg’s amalgam of heroes, will be based on the real-life Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese, an officer in the Watertown Police Department, “who distinguished himself in combat with Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.” Bridge Of Spies scribe Matt Charman is writing the screenplay, and filming is scheduled to begin in Boston in March.
