Jack White’s Lazaretto is the best-selling vinyl LP of the past 20 years

With 60,000 vinyl copies sold, Jack White’s Lazaretto has become the best selling LP since Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy, which was released all the way back in 1994. Billboard reports that the “ultra” version of the LP alone—which features a hologram that hovers when you play it, for crying out loud—sold 40,000 copies its first week out, and that LP sales account for about a quarter of Lazaretto’s total sales numbers. Lazaretto is, of course, also the bestselling LP of the year, beating out Arctic Monkeys’ AM, which has only sold about 29,000 copies.

As Consequence Of Sound notes, Soundscan’s vinyl tracking only goes back to 1991, and undoubtedly thousands of other LPs sold more than 60,000 copies a year in the decades before that. Still, that Lazaretto has broken the 20-year-old record speaks to both White’s prominence and the vinyl industry’s relative resurgence in recent years.
