Jake Gyllenhaal joins social media to yell about superheroes, as all men inevitably must

Reports emerged last May that Jake Gyllenhaal was in talks to play the evil Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and last night the actor made it official in a new Instagram post. It’s the first post from the notoriously private celebrity, who’s spoken at length about his reluctance to enter the online fray. His inexperience doesn’t show, however, as his debut post contains two key elements of the male social media experience: Comic books and frenzied cussing.

In the post, he holds a 1989 Amazing Spider-Man comic featuring Mysterio, then lowers it to reveal his shocked face and a furious utterance of “what the fuck!” The caption reads, “I just realized I’m not playing Spider-Man.” Jake, you rascal.

We’re excited to see Gyllenhaal indulge his evil side, though, what with his indelible turn in 2014's Nightcrawler being one of this decade’s most memorable turns. Also, he’ll be teaming up with the great Michael Keaton, who proved a formidable foe in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

We’ll likely get our first official look at Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio soon, as a trailer is expected to drop this Saturday during the Sony Panel at Comic-Con Experience in San Paulo, Brazil. As you wait, be sure to scroll the comments of Gyllenhaal’s post, where his pals Ryan Reynolds and Mark Ruffalo offered him a warm welcome. “I just realized I’m not playing Spider-Man either,” Ryan Reynolds, Marvel’s Deadpool, cracked. “Same,” Ruffalo, Marvel’s Hulk, added. Chris Hemsworth, you’re up.
