Jake Gyllenhaal to play Seymour, not-so-suddenly on Broadway

Even though he has four movies coming out this year, Jake Gyllenhaal is heading to Skid Row (Florists): he’ll star as the put-upon Seymour Krelborn in a Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors this July, joining a cast that already includes Ellen Greene and Taran Killam.

Gyllenhaal’s Seymour will square off against the villainous dentist portrayed by Killam, who is also Audrey’s (Ellen Greene) abusive asshole boyfriend. Greene played Audrey in the original staging of the musical back in 1982, so we’ll see if she’s still got that ingenue thing going for her. Rounding out the ensemble is Chuck Cooper, who will voice Audrey II, the carnivorous plant that puts the “horror” in the shop and show.

The two-night concert production will be Gyllenhaal’s official musical theater debut, but he has sung live before—and a song from a musical, no less. He’s also fresh off Broadway, having wrapped up a well-received stint as a dramatic lead in Constellations this winter.
