Jake Gyllenhaal to play the villainous Mysterio in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2

Jake Gyllenhaal is set to make his superhero-movie debut, as Variety reports that the Nightcrawler star is in talks to join webcrawler Peter Parker in Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. The details of Gyllenhaal’s role are being kept quiet, but Variety’s sources say he’ll be playing a villain in the film opposite his fellow Oscar nominee Michael Keaton. Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter add that Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio, the master illusionist first introduced by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964. Which of the multiple characters that have donned Mysterio’s fishbowl helmet in the comics will appear in the film, however, is still TBD.

Director Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Marisa Tomei are all on board for the as-yet-untitled superhero sequel, which will really be missing out on an opportunity if it doesn’t call itself Spider-Man: Prom.
