James Cameron declares that he’s permanently, exclusively in the Avatar-and-fish business

Unsatisfied with having Avatar sequels as his only projects for the immediate future, filmmaker, deep-sea explorer, and potential future Fish Emperor James Cameron has apparently taken that plan a step further, telling The New York TimesMedia Decoder blog that the Pandora-set films may be the only narrative features he’ll make from now on. While Cameron previously committed to two Avatar sequels as his next releases, he now claims to be “in the Avatar business. Period.” Having “completely disbanded” the development arm of production company Lightstorm Entertainment, Cameron says he’s “making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4, and I’m not going to produce other people’s movies for them.”

Those disappointed in this news can console themselves with Cameron’s revelation that he’ll continue producing and directing oceanic documentaries with the fervor of Troy McClure. “I’ve done five documentaries in the last 10 years, and hopefully I’ll do a lot more,” Cameron says, citing the upcoming Deepsea Challenge. And if that’s not enough for you greedy land-dwellers, just know that Cameron feels that “within the Avatar landscape I can say everything I need to say that I think needs to be said.” Save your arguments about the possibility of Avatar not containing all the truths worth exploring, because miles below the surface, James Cameron can’t hear them.
