In order to slake the public’s insatiable thirst for sexy spies, director and humanitarian James Cameron will provide much-needed relief by adapting his own True Lies into television form. Strands of the 1994 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a government spy, whose double life as a quiet family man unravels once his wife Jamie Lee Curtis discovers his secret and uses the opportunity to explore her inner stripper, can be found in seemingly half of the film and TV projects released in the last few years—everything from Mr. And Mrs. Smith to Killers to the upcoming Undercovers—so Cameron probably realized that the time was ripe to reclaim what was rightfully his, and render unto Cameron what is Cameron’s.
It remains to be seen what form a TV adaptation of his 1994 film would take, particularly in this post-9/11 blah blah blah, but it’s currently being developed by Rene Echevarria, co-showrunner of Castle, which suggests it will at least retain some of the original film’s quippy banter, if not necessarily some of its launching-Middle-Eastern-terrorists-through-skyscrapers and liberal doses of Tom Arnold. Incidentally, this would be Cameron’s first foray into TV since his Jessica Alba-starring sci-fi series Dark Angel, which Fox abused with scheduling changes before canceling it in order to make room for Firefly (which it then also canceled). But woe unto he who pulls that shit on James Cameron now.
