Good news for fans of hunter-killer cyborgs, convoluted time travel, and classic action movie catchphrases: James Cameron might be returning to the Terminator franchise. Deadline reports that Cameron is in early talks to act as a “godfather” on the latest entry in the long-running franchise, serving as an adviser and mentor for Deadpool director Tim Miller.
Cameron hasn’t been involved in the Terminator series since 1991, when he directed the massively successful (and awesome) Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Later installments in the franchise—Terminator 3, Salvation, and Genisys—have been made without Cameron’s involvement, but that might change in 2019. That’ll be 35 years after the original The Terminator, meaning that some of the rights to the franchise (which Cameron sold to the movie’s producers for $1 back in 1984, in exchange for a promise to keep him on as director) will revert to him. The Titanic and Avatar director has apparently been talking with Miller about how best they might utilize those new IP freedoms; producer David Ellison, whose Skydance Media co-financed 2015’s financially floppy Genisys, is also apparently involved in the talks.
