James Cameron plans to re-release Titanic in 3-D, put some melodrama all up in your face

Yes, the 3-D retrofitting of films like The Last Airbender is currently, uh, doing whatever the exact opposite of “providing a uniquely satisfying viewing experience” is, but that’s probably because it’s a technology meant solely for skilled hands—rough-hewn, yet surprisingly nimble hands that have held entire worlds such as those of director and 3-D tycoon James Cameron, who's now gearing up to plumb the three-dimensional depths of Titanic for a theatrical re-release in April 2012. While it’s been rumored since the release of Avatar that Cameron was interested in taking all of his older films and squeezing some more box office out of them updating them for a new generation of moviegoers, the LA Times got the first concrete announcement while attending the 100th birthday party of Titanic star Gloria Stuart, saying that the director will release his updated version around the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking, so plan your celebrations accordingly. There’s no word yet on how this will affect that James Cameron-directed Black Eyed Peas film that totally isn’t happening anyway.
