James Corden and Danny McBride flash back to 1990 as Michael Bolton and Kenny G

Some of our readers may not remember this, on account of the fact that they were zygotes, but 1990 was a year in which people actually took Michael Bolton and Kenny G seriously as musical artists. Some people even bought their albums. Lots of people bought their albums, actually! The vocalist and saxophonist were huge mainstays on VH1 back when VH1 was still MTV for moms.

Anyway, during the 32nd Grammy Award ceremonies 26 years ago, the two towering superstars of contemporary music—and that year’s winner for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and a nominee for Best Pop Instrumental Performance—took the stage together for an earth-rattling duet performance of Bolton’s chart-topping “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You.” This is not that performance.

That was actually James Corden and Danny McBride delivering an exceptionally spot-on tribute to that historic performance (complete with audience cutaway shots) on last night’s The Late Late Show With James Corden. How did they pull it off? That’s hard to say. Why did they pull it off? That’s even harder. All that’s important is that they did.

Here’s the original, in case you feel like traveling back in time.
