James Gunn launches some Guardians Of the Galaxy 2 news into orbit
Ever since America decided there was room in its tiny, blackened heart for a talking raccoon and a dancing tree, Guardians Of The Galaxy has become the hot new Marvel property, at least until the next sufficiently shiny object with bright colors comes along to give us something new at which to paw. America is a cat, is the general bullet point here. And like all cats, we expect to be regularly fed—in this case, with updates about our new toy. So like a good owner, James Gunn took to Twitter’s new video app Periscope to dispense some snippets of information about the upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, all while petting us and speaking in a soothing voice.
In response to a question about the status of the project, Gunn confirmed it was well underway, saying, “I turned in my treatment. I’m going to meet about it on Friday and we will start working on the screenplay next week.” Gunn has already been confirmed as the writer-director for the group’s next adventure, scheduled for May 5, 2017. He further explained that he was “very, very far along“ on the script, with 70 pages already done. It was unclear how many of those pages consisted of comic setpieces scored with seventies rock, but presumably it’s at least a good 60 percent or so.
Gunn also announced that while Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser is very much dead and won’t be returning, Karen Gillan will be back as Thanos’ daughter Nebula. This seems to set the stage for a sequel that is mostly just the Guardians sitting around, peppering Gillan with questions about what it was like to work on Doctor Who. (“I mean, sure, you’re Nebula, but if you had worked on Doctor Who, what would that be like?” Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord will say, before turning to the camera and winking broadly.) We will continue to provide you with updates as they’re released, because Guardians Of The Galaxy can warm even the iciest of blue alien hearts.
