James Gunn will return to write and direct Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
For the first time in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the director behind an original film and its sequel will be coming back to make another sequel (sorry, Jon Favreau). As reported by Variety, Guardians Of The Galaxy mastermind James Gunn will now be sticking with his series by writing and directing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn announced the news himself on his Facebook page, sharing a lengthy post about Hollywood’s history of “haphazard endings to trilogies” and him not wanting to be “part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn’t exist.” In the end, though, he says his love for Guardians’ group of wacky characters won out, and he decided that they “have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit.”
Gunn says Vol. 3 will come after the end of what he calls “the Avengers’ Infinity War”—which is probably a reference to both the upcoming Infinity War movie and its untitled sequel—and it will “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”
