Jared Leto laughs his way to a solo Joker movie
Get ready to reapply your forehead tattoos, DC fans, because it looks like Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with a solo Joker movie starring Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto. That comes from Variety, which says Leto will star in and produce the untitled movie, which will apparently act as a branch between Suicide Squad and future spin-offs of other Suicide Squad things, like maybe a solo Killer Croc movie or a prequel about the guy with the ropes whose name we don’t remember. The movie doesn’t have a writer yet, and Variety is unsure if it will happen before or after Suicide Squad 2 (which is set to go into production next year).
As far as we know, this is a different project from the Joker-centric movie that Warner Bros. announced in August, which was set to be a “criminal love story” centered on Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. That project may have evolved into this, or it may have evolved into the solo Harley Quinn movie, or it may still be happening. We don’t really know, but we do know that this solo Leto movie is totally separate from director Todd Phillips’ Joker origin movie, which might be inspired by The Killing Joke and might star Joaquin Phoenix as a totally separate incarnation of the Clown Prince Of Crime.
To summarize, there’s more than one movie about the Joker in the works, and at least one of them—but not all of them—will star Jared Leto. It’s a lot like the “three Jokers mystery” from the comics, but we’re confident someone will actually come along and solve this one eventually.
