Jason Alexander to play creator of The Grinder’s show-within-a-show

Now that most of the pre-air troubles that beset The Grinder have ground to a halt, the Fox show can get down to the business of landing TV notables for guest spots. To that end, TVLine reports that Jason Alexander has just been cast as the creator of the fake Grinder show whose cancellation inspires Dean Sanderson Jr. (Rob Lowe) to charm his way through real courtrooms (which are still fake to us).

Alexander will play Cliff Beamis, an “egomaniac and ersatz tough-guy” who’s the writer and creator of the courtroom drama within this potentially winning family sitcom. That character description comes from the Grinder himself, as Lowe announced the news on Twitter Tuesday night following a panel for the show at The Paley Center For Media.

There’s currently no word on how frequently Alexander will appear on the show, or just how tough and egomaniacal Beamis will be, but he doesn’t sound like a guy who will be sleeping on the job. The Grinder premieres on Fox on September 29.
