Jason Momoa looks weird without a beard
Jason Momoa and his beard are peas in a pod. They’re PB&J or rum and coke. They’re meant to be together, clinging to each other during those long, sodden Aquaman sequel shoots. Let’s say we were, in a word, surprised, then, when Momoa confronted us with uncanny valley vibes that slowly emerged as he shaved the thing off in a new video.
In a new clip uploaded to YouTube called “Goodbye Drogo… I SHAVED!,” the actor proves that clickbait can serve a purpose. The entire reason he’s shaving his beard, after all, is to snag our wandering, peripatetic eyes, if only for a second. Why? To help raise awareness for recycling, which, despite our best efforts, is still a very, very important thing we need to be doing. As he shaves, he walks through a desert overflowing with plastic and promotes the use of aluminum, which is both reusable and 100% recyclable. Per Momoa (and The Aluminum Association), “75% of all aluminum that’s ever been used is still in circulation today.”
Momoa said the beard is the work of not shaving for almost seven years and, as bits of it drift in the wind, he says goodbye to the characters he’s played since then, from Aquaman’s Arthur Curry to Game Of Thrones’ Khal Drogo.
“There’s a change coming, and it’s aluminum,” he says at the end. “You gotta get rid of your plastic water bottles. Aquaman’s trying to do the best he can for my kids, for your kids, for the world. Love you guys.”
Our attention captured, Momoa’s stunt has fostered a few different reactions.
One is distress at the loss of that beard.
Another is awe at how someone can be so good and good looking. Shouldn’t gene pools be fair?
We hope the other is, well, recycling.
