Jason Momoa makes “outlaw fur trader” look good in the trailer for Netflix’s Frontier

Game Of Thrones and Justice League star Jason Momoa operates within a fairly specific wheelhouse: glaring at people, stabbing them, and looking intimidating while doing so. So it’s safe to say Momoa is playing to type in the new trailer for Netflix’s Frontier, making “rogue fur trader” sound improbably badass as half-Irish woodsman Declan Harp. Harp is apparently the dangerous bad boy of the burgeoning North American fur trade, causing various members of the Hudson’s Bay Company to stuffily lose their shit with his brutal take on the corporate takeover.

From the trailer, Frontier—which debuts on January 20—seems to be taking a lot of notes from other uber-violent historical dramas, complete with copious maiming, growling threats, and female characters who exist primarily to be imperiled and apologize for the actions of their men. It remains to be seen whether it can rise above those bloody genre roots, or if “Jason Momoa kills a bunch of people in colonial Canada” will have to be enough of a draw.
