Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody reunite for Charlize Theron-starring Young Adult
Charlize Theron is attached to star in the black comedy Young Adult, a film that will finally give you the reunion of Juno collaborators Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody we’ll pretend you’ve been anticipating, just for the purposes of this announcement. Theron will play a thirtysomething divorcee writer of young-adult fiction who goes back to her hometown and tries to get back together with her high school boyfriend, who's now married with a kid. In the meantime, she reconnects with all her old acquaintances and learns how their own shitty lives have turned out. It's a comedy!
Back in March, Cody described the screenplay as “pretty serious and fucked up,” saying, “You don’t get to see women be antiheroes that often, where it's like somebody like Mickey Rourke, who gets a comeback in The Wrestler. It's rarer that you'll have a studio say, ‘Let's have an actress come back and be ugly!’” Along with making Theron “ugly”—though that’s possibly just on the inside—for the first time since Monster, the film will be Reitman’s first return to the directing chair since Up In The Air failed to win him the Oscar yet again, and he remains determined to chronicle “all those hopes and dreams that often get crushed by the realities of life” until he gets one, damn it.
