Nominations for the 56th annual Grammy Awards are out. Jay Z leads this year’s pack with nine nods, though he was shut out of all the major categories like Album and Record of the Year. Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams each earned seven nods, with both Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis garnering an Album of the Year nod. They’ll compete with Daft Punk, Taylor Swift, and, for whatever reason, Sara Bareilles. A semi-complete list of the categories and nominees is below.
Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” Lorde’s “Royals,” Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out Of Heaven,” and the Blurred Lines guys’ “Blurred Lines” are all competing for Record of the Year—which, as always, is somehow different than Song Of The Year. Nominees for that category include Pink’s “Just Give Me A Reason,” Mars’ “Locked Out Of Heaven,” Katy Perry’s “Roar,” Lorde’s “Royals,” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love.”
The always-puzzling nominees for Best "New" Artist include Kendrick Lamar, James Blake (who released his first album in 2011), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (who released their first EP in 2009), Kacey Musgraves, (who self-released three albums over the past 10 years before putting out one on a major label), and Ed Sheeran, whom the Grammys already should have learned about last year, when his “The A Team” was nominated for Song of the Year.
Neko Case, The National, Nine Inch Nails, Vampire Weekend, and Tame Impala will compete for Best Alternative Music Album, while Kathy Griffin, Craig Ferguson, Ron White, Bob Saget, and Tig Notaro will compete for Best Comedy Album. Meanwhile, Kanye West’s Yeezus was only nominated in a single category, Best Rap Album.
The Grammys will be held Sunday, Jan. 26 in Los Angeles, California. They’ll be broadcast live on CBS, and hosted by the network's token hip guy, LL Cool J.
