Jazz legend Hugh Masekela and his ESPN commentator son Sal are getting a father-son biopic

African jazz legend Hugh Masekela is getting a biopic—or, rather, a father/son biopic with his son, ESPN commentator Selema “Sal” Masekela. The project focuses on the elder’s role as a South African apartheid activist exiled for more than 30 years, as well as his son’s struggle to step out of the shadow of his father.

The project will be produced by Olympus Pictures and Paul Haggis’ Hwy 61 and is still untitled. South African filmmaker Mukunda Michael Dewil has been hired to write and direct the movie that will apparently also feature a lot of surfing, something that both he and the younger Masekela are heavily into.

The elder Masekela is perhaps best known for his contributions to Paul Simon's Graceland, though his "Grazing In The Grass" is one of the better-known (albeit perhaps not to the masses) songs in the African jazz world, having been covered by Raven-Symone and featured in movies like The Last King Of Scotland and Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy.
