Jean Grey rises in the first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix
The crummy X-Men: The Last Stand gestured toward the iconic “Dark Phoenix Saga” from Chris Claremont’s run on the X-Men comics, with Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey turning vaguely evil and wearing a bunch of red clothing. But Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix—a sequel to Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse—has set itself up to be a more direct adaptation of the classic storyline.
Now, we’ve got a proper trailer for Dark Phoenix, which aired tonight during The Late Late Show With James Corden, and things are looking predictably ominous. As far as displays of godly, world-destroying power, Sophie Turner’s Jean mostly contents herself with tossing a couple of cop cars around, but at least she’s doing it with some creepy contacts in her eyes. Meanwhile, it looks like the series is veering hard into the “Professor X as overly controlling manipulator” direction, with James McAvoy doing his best justification for screwing around in his student’s head, and Michael Fassbinder and Jennifer Lawrence on hand to call him out on his bullshit.
Dark Phoenix bursts its way into theaters on Valentine’s Day, 2019.
