Jeff Guinn & Andy Grieser: Something In The Blood
Something In The Blood ascertains that there are indeed vampires. Sure, why not? Perhaps these vampires are not of the supernatural variety, but there are people who believe there is a noble heritage which supports the drinking of blood. To back this up, the authors interview no more than eight people, of which six are blood-drinkers and/or energy thieves—one of them has her credibility stripped shortly after her interview—and two are self-described "vampire experts." What facts do we learn from this unimportant treatise? Well, 15 percent of all vampires live in California. Vampires hate country music. Vampires are delusional freaks who are having their beliefs validated by getting to be the subjects of a book. Not once do the authors give the subjects the scornful drubbing they so desperately need. Instead, they indulge their every statement, then spit it back to us at a sixth-grade reading level. Something in the Blood is shoddily researched, poorly organized and badly written. The only thing worse than the stroking of the vampires must have been the stroking of the authors by the publisher, who should have passed the book along to a well-paid team of editors to bang some sense into it.
