Jeff Mangum, members of Sonic Youth and Fugazi to perform at Occupy Wall Street benefit
Jeff Mangum, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, and Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto will perform at an upcoming Occupy Wall Street charity event. Other performers include Janeane Garofalo, TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, and Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead.
The event—which will also stream as a web-based telethon—takes place Nov. 15 at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge, and aims to raise $50,000 for Strike Debt, an OWS fringe organization that purchases debt for the purpose of eliminating it. As the group’s website says, “We buy debt for pennies on the dollar, but instead of collecting it, we abolish it. We cannot buy specific individual's debt—instead, we help liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, goodwill, and collective refusal." According to materials associated with Strike Debt, a $250 donation eliminates an estimated $5,000 worth of debt.
Tickets for the event dubbed “The People’s Bailout” go on sale Nov. 2.
