Jeffrey Mace

Who he is: Jeffrey Mace, a.k.a. Patriot

His power: Jeffrey Mace has no powers on his own; however, he regularly uses the Patriot Serum, which grants him superhuman durability and strength.

His story: First appearing on Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., journalist Jeffrey Mace became an international sensation during the Vienna bombing that killed King T’Chaka of Wakanda, apparently saving a woman injured in the blast. (In truth, he’d simply tripped and fell on her in chaos.) That false reputation for heroism made him the ideal choice for the directorship of the resurgent S.H.I.E.L.D., especially after the Patriot Program allowed him to masquerade as an Inhuman, normalizing the Terrigen-afflicted beings to the American people. An idealist, Mace frequently clashed with former director Phil Coulson, especially over his treatment of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent turned vigilante Daisy Johnson. Mace eventually revealed the true source of his powers—and what really happened in Vienna—to Coulson, who ordered him to continue to serve as the public face of S.H.I.E.L.D. while allowing Coulson to direct its clandestine ops.

Mace was later captured by the artificial intelligence Aida. His mind is currently trapped in a virtual reality construct known as the Framework, while a Life Model Decoy duplicate acts in his place—though you might be hard pressed to tell the difference at times. (Sorry, Mace. You’re really a good guy!)

Played by: Jason O’Mara

Currently, Jeffrey Mace is: Trapped inside virtual reality and unable to perform his duties as director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Where will we see him next? In season four of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
