Jeffrey Tambor(’s character) comes out as transgender in the trailer for Transparent

Amazon has yet to have one of its original series break through to the mainstream, but its recent slate of offerings—which includes some pretty high-profile talent in front of and behind the camera—shows that it’s trying to change that. One of the most promising is Transparent, which was announced last fall and already debuted its pilot (which our own TV Club called “a keeper”) back in February.

Transparent was created by Six Feet Under and United States Of Tara’s Jill Soloway, in her first series creator credit. Jeffrey Tambor stars as Maura, the patriarch-turned-matriarch of an offbeat Los Angeles clan, with Gaby Hoffman, Jay Duplass, and Amy Landecker as Maura’s three grown children and Judith Light as Maura’s ex-wife. The trailer for Transparent promises lots of laughs and lots of heart—but, you know, in a good way—in an upcale Los Angeles setting. The full first season of Transparent will be available to stream on Amazon Prime beginning September 26, but you can watch the first episode right now for free.
