Multiple people with microphones made the same unfortunate mistake during last night’s Golden Globes festivities. The two offenders—Jenna Bush Hager and Michael Keaton, respectively—said “Hidden Fences” when they meant to say Hidden Figures, seemingly confusing two nominated films that both happen to star black actors. Hager, an NBC correspondent, messed up when interviewing Pharrell on the red carpet.
She apologized on Today this morning, explaining that she saw both movies and thought they were “brilliant.” She continued: “If I offended people, I am deeply sorry. It was a mistake. Y’all know I’m not perfect. I am authentic, but a human, and what I didn’t want to do is make anybody feel lesser than who they are.”
Keaton was more nonchalant about the incident when he was ambushed by TMZ’s cameras last night. “I’m sorry, I apologize, I screwed it up,” he said. Once he learned it had “gone viral,” he shrugged it off. “I’m going to sleep pretty well,” he said. Keaton’s blunder came when he was announcing Octavia Spencer’s nomination for Hidden Figures in the Best Supporting Actress category. Viola Davis won for Fences.
