Jim Carrey freaks out the squares on the red carpet
Red carpet interviews are not, by their nature, very illuminating—a constructed social environment in which celebrities are shuttled like cattle in front of various cameras to have the same conversation over and over again. You could forgive one of them for feeling a bit disillusioned by the entire process, seeing through the falsehood of the entire event and wondering what it all really adds up to. And while that is exactly what Jim Carrey appeared to be doing in this red-carpet chat with E! News’ Catt Sadler, that still doesn’t quite set the stage for his performance, which ranges from self-consciously “weird” (walking in circles around Sadler before the interview) to genuinely worrying. Sadler does a pretty good job asking follow-ups, but he’s not having it at all. “We don’t matter!” he chirps toward the end of the conversation. “That’s the good news.”
Carrey’s moved somewhat outside of the public eye in recent years, serving as executive producer on I’m Dying Up Here and keeping busy becoming a (surprisingly good!) painter. He has also definitely watched What The Bleep Do We Know!? at least once in the past six months. Here’s hoping his field of energy found whatever it was dancing toward at Fashion Week.
