Jimmy Fallon made a surprise speech at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School's graduation
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon made a speech during today’s graduation ceremony at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida—the school where a gunman killed 17 people earlier this year. Fallon’s involvement was a surprise to the students, and THR doesn’t say how or why he got involved. The event wasn’t open to the press, but it sounds like his speech was at least partially the sort of jokey address you’d expect a guy like Fallon to make at a high school commencement—THR says he made a joke about the graduates eventually becoming adults “who will Facebook search each other at 2 in the morning for the next 10 years.”
Still, Fallon did have serious words for the graduates, telling them to “keep changing the world” and “making us proud.” He also thanked them for their “bravery and activism,” adding, “When something feels hard, remember that it gets better. Choose to move forward. Don’t let anything stop you.” The THR story notes that some families took the stage to accept diplomas on the shooting victims’ behalf, while others turned down the offer to attend because it would be “too painful.”
