Jimmy Kimmel tears into Republican health-care critics on Live!
After taking the rest of last week off to spend time with his newborn son (and watch some cable news, apparently) last night Jimmy Kimmel returned to host Live!. And with the future of American health care safe after Kimmel’s heartfelt call for universal coverage last week, it was time to get back to business as usual. Just kidding. Heartless kleptocrats are still in charge of deciding whether Americans can be denied health-care coverage for—well, basically for having a body in the first place, particularly one with a vagina.
And so Kimmel used his opening monologue last night to mock critics who cynically referred to Kimmel as a “Hollywood elite” or a dancing monkey who needs to stick to the apolitical sort of organ-grinding. (He had particularly harsh words for Newt Gingrich, quipping, “there’s a reason he’s named after a lizard.”) But Kimmel gave the benefit of the doubt to Republican senator Bill Cassidy, a gastroenterologist and founder of a community clinic in Baton Rouge who takes a more moderate (but still pro-Trump) stance on the issue.
Cassidy referred to “the Jimmy Kimmel test” as a metric on CNN, and Kimmel took the bait, interviewing Cassidy about his plans for an effective health care bill before giving his own version of the test: “The Jimmy Kimmel test should be that no family should be denied medical care, emergency or otherwise, because they can’t afford it.”
