According to Twitch (and so far, no one else), Warner Bros. has picked up the forthcoming reunion of director Spike Jonze and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, a film that was revealed back in March to be “a satire about how world leaders gather to figure out all the seismic events that will take place in the world, from oil prices to wars that will be waged.” No doubt Alex Jones has already covered his laptop screen with sprays of vehement spittle about how such a thing is no laughing matter. Anyway, if Twitch’s report is to be believed, said satire will star Joaquin Phoenix in a role yet to be determined—although, admittedly, that could be just a rumor, perhaps based entirely on Phoenix’s own recent experiments with exploring the filmmakers’ favorite themes of identity and perception in I’m Still Here, which more people likely would have enjoyed had they just been under the delusion that it was a Jonze-Kaufman movie.
But for what it’s worth, Phoenix definitely has been working hard to align himself with some fairly strange and interesting projects of late, beginning with his upcoming role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. Incidentally, that movie, like this still-untitled Jonze-Kaufman project, is backed by our favorite rich girl Megan Ellison, so if Phoenix really is attached to this one as well, her producing career certainly seems invested in everyone learning to like him again. Although honestly, both Anderson and Jonze-Kaufman could build their respective upcoming films around CGI sandwiches and we’d probably still go check it out. [via The Playlist]
