John Carpenter lives!
After nearly a decade in the wilderness—unless you count a couple of Masters Of Horror shorts—genre king John Carpenter is finally returning to the fold with The Ward, his first feature since 2001’s Ghosts Of Mars. Amber Heard, currently drawing attention for her revealing (wink, wink) performance in a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ The Informers, stars as a young woman terrorized by ghosts in a mental institution. (Presumably, these ghosts are from a planet other than Mars.) While it seems absurd to get too excited about Carpenter’s comeback—the man hasn’t made a great film in 20 years (since 1988’s They Live) and his ‘90s output is defended mainly by diehard apologists—but excited we are! When you’ve got Halloween, Assault On Precinct 13, The Thing, and Big Trouble In Little China on your résumé, you get a lifetime pass. And to pump you up, too, here’s the fight scene from They Live:
