John Carpenter teases a return to directing, possible U.S. live shows
According to his wife and longtime producer Sandy King Carpenter, John Carpenter is looking to make a return to television with four series waiting to go to network. (Carpenter directed two episodes of Showtime’s Masters Of Horror in 2005 and 2006; his last feature was 2010’s The Ward.) “As far as I’m concerned, we’ll do all of them,” King Carpenter tells the Killer POV podcast. “They’re great, and they’re different from anything that’s out there … they again push the boundaries of what’s horror.”
According to Sandy King, the master of horror himself would be directing the pilots and then continue on as an executive producer. “There’s a sci-fi, there’s horror, there’s one that I guess would be [a] sci-fi-horror futuristic kind of thing … I think they’ll fulfill what people expect out of him by also being unpredictable,” she says. Presumably one of them will be a reimagining of Rio Bravo, because Carpenter excels at reimagining Rio Bravo.
While Carpenter told The Hollywood Reporter last month that he’s content playing video games and watching the NBA, the director seems to be preparing for a renaissance. He is currently scheduled to play several live shows overseas—including two new dates, at Manchester’s Albert Hall and London’s The Troxy—that will presumably concentrate on material from his Lost Themes album, as well as bits from his famous film scores.
King Carpenter also suggests that American fans might be in for a treat this year: “I have a feeling there may be other chances [to see him]. But I have a feeling I’ll also be killed if I say anything,” she says. Could she be hinting at a possible Coupe De Villes reunion? Nick Castle and Tommy Lee Wallace haven’t let anything slip just yet.
