Though it’s been a while since he produced a segment on it, John Oliver is diligent about perusing his Last Week Tonight fan mail, i.e., YouTube comments. It’s presumably important for the host to stay in touch with his viewers, even if some of them are more interested in “destroying” his ability to take down poorly pompadoured targets. So with the show currently on break, Oliver shared this web-exclusive video, in which he digs through the online cheers and jeers.
Oliver gamely addresses even the most ostensibly insulting remarks, including the ones that describe him as a Pokémon-pedophile hybrid. But he appears unaffected by the negativity, even when one commenter refers to his eyebrows as “alien caterpillars.” Oliver’s mostly amused by his detractors, one of whom describes Last Week Tonight as “uniquely boring,” which he just interprets as an oxymoronic statement. The disparagement never really cuts Oliver, who even takes one comment about how much he’s aged as validation of his “don’t die yet” lifestyle. And not only is the vitriol wanting, but Oliver becomes a zillionaire by the clip’s end, so he winds up with the last scoff.
