John Oliver tears apart the inane proposals of third-party candidates
John Oliver, having spent plenty of time examining Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, turned his attentions to the third-party candidates last night. And he found some pretty strange shit, even if you discount the ad for tiger enthusiast Joe Exotic’s run. But the Last Week Tonight host primarily focused on Jill Stein and Gary Johnson.
While Oliver lampooned them in part for oddball personal traits—Stein’s ’90s folk rock band got a call-out, as did Johnson’s tongue thing and his creepy comments about Mount Everest—Oliver mostly took issue with their flimsy plans. Specifically, he demonstrated how Stein’s plan to bail out student debt and Johnson’s desire to create a federal consumption tax are basically impossible to accomplish. “The more you look at both Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, the more you realize the lack of coverage they complain about so much might have genuinely benefited them because their key proposals begin to crumble under the slightest scrutiny,” he said.
Oliver ended on a down note, painting this entire election in grim terms. “There is no perfect candidate in this race, and when people say you don’t have to choose the lesser of two evils they are right, because you have to choose the lesser of four.” Can it be November 8 already?
