John Williams isn’t retiring any time soon
In news that will probably come as a relief to the horn players and timpanists of Hollywood, five-time Academy Award winner John Williams has announced that he’s lined up two more high-profile movie scores to compose. Unsurprisingly, Williams will be contributing music to the next installments of two of the franchises that helped make him a household name (in households where people talk a lot about movie composers, anyway): Indiana Jones and Star Wars.
According to /Film, the 84-year-old Williams has been tapped to write the scores for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII (due out on December 15, 2017), and the recently announced Indiana Jones 5 (due out July 19, 2019, presuming Steven Spielberg can get the cobwebs off of Harrison Ford’s performance by then). Williams—whose work on films like Jurassic Park, E.T. and the Harry Potter movies has helped him become the most Oscar-nominated person currently alive—was honored with a lifetime achievement award last night by the American Film Institute, in a ceremony that will be broadcast next month on TNT.
At the ceremony, Spielberg confirmed that Williams would be composing the Indy 5 score, continuing his 35-year history with the franchise. As for Star Wars, Williams—who just finished work on Spielberg’s The BFG—revealed his own reasons for wanting to continue with the films, joking with Variety that he “didn’t want anybody else writing music for Daisy Ridley.”
