Jon Favreau to remind you Spider-Man: Homecoming totally takes place in the MCU

As the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be distributed by an outside studio, the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming represents a big step forward for the partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony. As such, we can’t really blame either studio for wanting to make absolutely sure everybody knows Spidey’s latest adventure is an official MCU movie (even though you’d think Tom Holland’s celebrated debut in Captain America: Civil War this summer would have removed all doubt.)

To that end, Variety is reporting that another MCU mainstay has signed on for the film, with Iron Man director and co-star Jon Favreau reprising his role as Tony Stark’s friend and chauffeur Happy Hogan. Given that Robert Downey Jr.’s already been confirmed for this latest Spidey reboot—which also co-stars Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, and Hannibal Burress—we’re going to assume the two will appear together, since otherwise it’d make for a really awkward coincidence when Hogan wanders randomly into Peter Parker’s school and runs into his boss.

Favreau hasn’t directed an MCU movie since 2010’s Iron Man 2, although he reprised his role as Tony Stark’s burly majordomo in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3. Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently set for a July 7, 2017 release.
