Jon Hamm might have the chiseled jaw of a superhero, but he’s never played one. However, he says he has turned down several of those roles, and doesn’t regret it. In an interview with Radio Times about his work in the upcoming Black Mirror: White Christmas, Hamm said that he has “been in contention for quite a few ” superhero roles but has decided against taking them. He also criticized the current superhero movie business model:
“The deals that they make [actors] do are so draconian. And, of course, you are signed on for not only the movie that you are signed on for … but at least two more that you haven’t read and you have no idea what they are going to be and all the crossover ones you are going to have to do.”
However, not doing a superhero movie makes it “hard to make an impression” in Hollywood, according to Hamm. Ruminating on the special kind of irrelevance reserved for the ranks of People’s Sexiest Man Alive, he said, “Ask anyone under the age of 20 if they have heard of me and they will go, ‘No, that guy looks like my dad.’” Because all dads these days look like they walked off the cover of a romance novel.
Discussing the topic of social media (the focus of the Black Mirror special), Hamm continued sculpting his image as an old, inconsequential actor who only sometimes makes people faint when he smiles by revealing that he doesn’t have a social media presence. According to Hamm, social media is “terrifying” and that “to not participate in it is to not participate in society.” Instead, Hamm floats above humanity, a solitary, handsome loner surveying a world with which he can never fully assimilate. Just don’t ask him to put on a cape.
