Jon Stewart thinks the Samantha Bee outrage was bullshit
Last week, Trumpers eager to try and prove that Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet wasn’t so bad were eager to discover that Full Frontal host Samantha Bee had referred to Ivanka Trump as a “feckless cunt” on her TBS show. The backlash against Bee came quickly, with the White House even testing the limits of the First Amendment by declaring that Full Frontal should be canceled just like Roseanne—even though it should be clear to everyone that saying something racist is worse than saying a bad word. Either way, Bee apologized, saying she “crossed a line” with her comment, and TBS pulled the clip in question from Full Frontal’s YouTube page.
Over the weekend, during an appearance at Colossal Clusterfest in San Francisco, Bee’s old Daily Show buddy Jon Stewart noted that he thinks the outrage was bullshit. “They don’t give a shit about the word cunt,” Stewart said of the Trump administration, adding that he expects Trump himself “say that instead of ‘please.’” That comes from The Daily Beast, which says Stewart also implied that Bee should never have apologized, saying that the phony outrage game conservatives love to play is a “strategy” and “it’s working.”
Also, in what The Daily Beast refers to as a “positive note,” Stewart said that he’s “incredibly optimistic” about the future because there’s still time to fix the toxicity of the political divide. He says he has “close friends and family” who voted for Trump, and he says he tries to “love them” anyway because “they have other qualities that I think are exceptional.” So that’s nice for him.
