Jonathan Banks drinks a lot, talks Breaking Bad with Paul F. Tompkins on Speakeasy

Paul F. Tompkins is a fantastic comedian, but he doesn’t get enough credit for being a great interviewer. He’s been on top of his game on his web series Speakeasy, and this week’s episode features Jonathan Banks of Breaking Bad and countless other roles in film and television. Banks really embraces the speakeasy atmosphere, liberally indulging in his drink and chiding Tompkins to keep up as they talk about his early acting inspirations—Donald O’Connor’s “Make ‘Em Laugh” routing from Singin’ In The Rain and Anthony Quinn in Zorba The Greek, which inspired Banks to journey around the Greek Isles on his own. They also talk about Banks’ roles in Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hrs., and Wiseguy before digging into Breaking Bad for the majority of the interview. Banks has some fascinating stories, and continually praises Michael Slovis’ cinematogrphay as integral and under-appreciated—he’s the sole reason for the gorgeous wide shot of Mike slumping over in “Say My Name” with the light fading. And to add to the current critical prestige, Tompkins asks about Banks' guest role on Parks And Recreation, and his upcoming part on Community. It’s a charming turn for the grizzled character actor, and yet another instance where Tompkins gets the best out of a guest for his web series. Check out the full interview below, and take a look at the bonus video of Banks reading fairy tales.
