Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell casts its Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

The pantheon of Anglophilic fantasy geek culture is about to induct two new names, now that the BBC has announced its choices for the two leads in its upcoming miniseries adaptation of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Susanna Clarke’s bestselling Napoleonic War-era tale of wizardry and English manners. Eddie Marsan, probably best known for small roles in big films like Mission Impossible III and Sherlock Holmes, will star as Gilbert Norrell, the reclusive magician who reintroduces the supernatural to English society after years of dormancy. Olivier Award-winning musical theater vet Bertie Carvel will play opposite him as Jonathan Strange, Norrell’s young and brash pupil. The two will be joined by a cast of solid British character actors, including Paul Kaye (Game Of Thrones) and Marc Warren (The Good Wife) in the project set to air in the U.S. on BBC America.
