Josh Brolin and Ryan Reynolds are really good at insulting each other
There’s a profane, adolescent energy to the Deadpool franchise, and the forthcoming sequel’s bizarre marketing campaign reflects that juvenile unpredictability. Over the past few weeks, star Ryan Reynolds has danced with Celine Dion, “spoiled” his own movie, and dressed up like a unicorn on South Korean TV, and now he’s bringing co-star Josh Brolin along for the ride. Brolin, who plays the time-traveling Cable in the film, recently appeared with Reynolds on BBC 1's “Playground Insults,” which, you guessed it, found the duo trading below-the-belt barbs.
“You are a muffin-snuggling pirate puncher,” Reynolds begins, foolishly emphasizing the “playground” part of the game rather than the actual “insults.” Luckily, Brolin, as befits a man with such a square, foreboding jaw, wastes no time bringing up Reynolds’ misbegotten, low-grossing turn as the Green Lantern. But though Brolin dominates in the early going—at one point he calls out Reynolds’ very “small” penis and very “big” balls—Reynolds makes an unexpected comeback with some primo Goonies jabs.
The funniest part, however, might be Brolin’s toss-off claim that “Goonies was totally real,” which he delivers with the kind of grim forthrightness we’ve come to expect from the Oscar-nominated actor. Somebody put this man in more comedies.
