Josh Gad developing limited series about real-life toy company war
Everybody’s loves seeing toys that come to life in Pixar movies and toys that beat the crap out of each other in Michael Bay movies, but it turns out that the behind-the-scenes drama of the actual toy companies is just as exciting as any Transformers or Toy Story movie—Alright, maybe not “just as exciting,” but exciting enough for a drama series on Amazon starring Josh Gad, at least. That’s according to Deadline, which says Amazon is developing Toy Wars, a limited series based on G. Wayne Miller’s non-fiction book of the same name, with Gad set to co-write the series along with showrunner Josh Schwartz and director Seth Gordon. The series will reportedly chronicle “the real-life battle” between Hasbro (G.I. Joe, Transformers) and Mattel (Barbie) in the ‘80s and ‘90s, centering on a man named Alan Hassenfeld who suddenly found himself in charge of Hasbro after his older brother (a “marketing genius who had built the family toy company into a powerhouse”) died of AIDS.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the series will feature any scenes where Barbie actually fights Optimus Prime, but maybe Gad and his crew will throw in a dream sequence or something.
