Josh Trank is back, making an Al Capone movie with Tom Hardy

It’s been a year since Chronicle director Josh Trank’s career potentially flamed off with the high-profile superhero flop Fantastic Four. Now Trank is back, writing and directing on a project that’s decidedly closer to his low-budget roots: a story about the final days of notorious gangster Al Capone, with Tom Hardy in the leading role.

Fonzo—as in, Alphonse Capone—will star Hardy as the aging crimelord, who’s now in dire straits as his mind starts to slip: “After nearly a decade of imprisonment,” a press release description reads, “Dementia rots his mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.”

This is actually the second time Hardy’s been attached to star as the notorious criminal. He was also supposed to star as Capone in Harry Potter director David Yates’ Cicero, a project that was ultimately as moribund as Trank’s own long-aborted Star Wars film.
