Joss Whedon expresses grudging admiration for Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman

It is a popularly held belief that there’s bad blood between the filmmakers in Marvel’s camp and those in DC’s. Obviously, that’s not the case, because these are professional colleagues we’re talking about, and that would be absurd. (Almost as absurd as the real-life grudge between Marvel and DC’s fanbases.) Case in point: Joss Whedon, the man behind the first two Avenger films. During a recent interview with Complex, he expressed his excitement for Patty Jenkins’ upcoming Wonder Woman.

“I want it to be good. The trailer was just wonderful. I’ll probably be disappointed, me more than anybody else, because I’ll be like, ‘Wow, my version…’ or whatever, but I can still get myself up for it,” Whedon admitted. “The trailer had her shield and her fire hammer and yep, I’m good, this will be fine, everything is good. Such an image.”

The 52-year-old filmmaker was at one time supposed to be the person who would deliver a cinematic version of Diana Prince to fans. In 2005, he inked a deal with Warner Bros. to write and direct an adaptation, but he ultimately left the project due to differences with the studio and what he characterized to The A.V. Club as an “overwhelming” lack of enthusiasm.

In a 2011 interview with Rookie, Whedon gave some some insight into the version of Wonder Woman that almost was. “She was a little bit like Angelina Jolie,” she said. “She sort of traveled the world. She was very powerful and very naïve about people, and the fact that she was a goddess was how I eventually found my into her humanity and vulnerability, because she would look at us and the way we kill each other and the way we let people starve and the way the world is run and she’d just be like, ‘None of this makes sense to me. I can’t cope with it, I can’t understand, people are insane.’
