After more than a year of delays, work stoppages, the loss of investors and publicists, and the exit of Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming, Julie Taymor’s Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark finally has a premiere date, with preview performances beginning November 14 and an officially opening night set for December 21. The show—which features music by U2’s Bono and The Edge—stars Carney frontman Reeve Carney in the title role of Peter Parker, with Broadway vets Jennifer Damiano and Patrick Page being brought in to replace Wood and Cumming as Mary Jane and The Green Goblin, respectively. At a reported budget of $52 million, it’s by far the most expensive musical in history—easily eclipsing the version of The Lord Of The Rings that was staged in Toronto and London’s West End in 2006 and 2007. The origin story follows Parker as he first becomes the titular superhero, and finds himself “maligned by the media, buffeted by financial woes, and stretched thin by the expectations of the world at large.” How very meta.
