Julie & The Wolf debut an eerie video to match their haunting single

The members of Montreal-based group Julie & The Wolf have some dark issues on their minds, if this new video is any indication. The two-piece band just released this exclusive premiere of their new video for “The Devil Is The Man,” the leadoff single from forthcoming album Ablaze, out October 30 on Audiogram. While the whole album is a minimalist endeavor, pairing Julie’s piano and lush strings with singer Wolf Merzbacher’s earnest vocals, this song finds them in a particularly haunted mood, evoking a sense of oppressive gloom. The accompanying video (directed by Cinelande’s Yan Giroux) makes it even bleaker—if that’s possible—as initial images of children and nature slowly give way to more unsettling scenes, like a man yelling at someone tied up and hooded. It’ll throw you off balance even as it pulls you in with the stark beauty of the music, so, really the ideal thing for a lighthearted day. Maybe show it to your kids if you need to terrify them? If you’re lucky enough to be in Montreal, you can attend the free record launch show—the rest of us will just have to be unsettled by the music from the comfort of our own homes.
