Kanye West accuses Drake of threatening his family in epic, exhausting tweetstorm
We are so sorry, but Kanye West won’t stop tweeting about Drake and we have no choice but to write about it. Kanye has remained at the center of what’s probably 2018's most potent beef, which centers around Pusha T revealing that Drake has a “secret son” with model Sophie Brussaux on scorched-earth diss track “The Story Of Adidon,” which may or may have been produced by Kanye. West has tried to smooth things over with the Canadian rapper but, motivated by betrayal or a thirst for more publicity, he took to Twitter Thursday night to reignite their feud.
Christ, where to begin here? Let’s hit a few touchstones:
– It all began when Kanye posted a screenshot of a text message in which one of his team members sent over a clearance request for “Say What’s Real,” a 2009 Drake track that samples West’s “Say You Will.”
– The conversation pivoted to “sneak dissing” and Drake doing so on tracks by Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” and French Montana’s “No Stylist,” in which he apparently took a jab at Kanye’s Adidas Yeezy Boost 350s sneaker line. Kanye seemed particularly stung by Scott’s complicity in the situation, what with the pair’s friendship and, one can assume, their Kardashian connection.
– Kanye is also “hot” about an incident that occurred at a recent Pusha T concert in Drake’s hometown of Toronto. There, a group of attendees rushed the stage, leading to a riot of sorts that sent at least a few people to the hospital. It was rumored that Drake was involved in the incident, and Kanye certainly seems to think that’s the case.
– At one point, Kanye tweeted that he received a call from Drake. “Mission accomplished,” he said, seeming to indicate that the beef was more or less squashed. But he returned a bit later claiming that Drake tried “to threatened (sic) me.” He added, “So drake if anything happens to me or anyone from my family you are the first suspect.” The subsequent barrage of tweets accused Drake of trying to be “so street,” and went on to find Kanye name-dropping rappers Tekashi 6ix9ine and XXXTentacion, both of whom dabbled in actual violence and gang activity before getting arrested and, in the latter case, getting murdered.
– He also accused Drake of bullying him due to, at least in part, Kanye’s mental health issues.
– This led to him (and his wife, Kim Kardashian) claiming that, without Kanye’s influence (represented here by West’s “pink polos) there would be no Drake.
– And then there were tweets like these, which have been embedded into more quote-tweets than you can possibly fathom.
– In the end, though, it seems to all come back to Kanye’s denial that he told Pusha about Drake’s son, or was involved in the diss track. He claims repeatedly that he “never did a diss record” and that he would “never put negative energy into a song.”
– There’s also something about purple emojis, but we got nothing on that one.
And because this is Kanye West, Twitter, and 2018 we’re talking about, Kanye returned this morning by posting a photo of him standing by a painting of the long-deceased banker J.P. Morgan. “Me and JP heal the world,” he wrote.
It’s only going to get weirder, isn’t it?
